TAX LITIGATION

What It Is

We provide thoughtful and experienced advocacy on behalf of clients in federal, state and local tax disputes. We represent clients at all stages of the administrative process and at every judicial level. The tax practice and its lawyers are routinely named as leaders in their field.

Our firm’s tax lawyers provide advice on a wide variety of complex transactions and financing techniques. They have significant experience in resolving tax controversies, as well as in obtaining rulings and other guidance from tax authorities. We pride ourselves on providing thoughtful advice in a timely, efficient manner.

Two focuses of our practice are advising clients during the planning of transactions so that their case is “audit-ready” before audits commence and – whenever in the client’s best interest – resolving disputes without litigation. By working to resolve disputes at the earliest possible stage, we are often able to reach favorable outcomes for our clients without the additional cost, distraction and publicity resulting from formal tax litigation.

However, some disputes cannot be resolved consensually. When litigation is required, we deploy a team of experienced tax litigators who understand both the substantive tax issues and the process of presenting an effective case. Our attorneys have a deep understanding of various tax matters, including those of the energy, retail, employment services, banking, financial products, heavy manufacturing, food processing, insurance, telecommunications, transportation, entertainment and utility industries. Similarly, we have significant experience with many federal, state and local taxing authorities.
